New Safety Guidelines for Pleasure Yachts < 24m Launched

Transport Malta’s Merchant Shipping Directorate has introduced new non-mandatory safety guidelines for pleasure yachts under 24 metres, designed to strengthen safety standards across the Malta flag registry.

Developed following a comprehensive industry review, these guidelines establish a coherent and practical safety framework, helping yacht owners and operators align with recognised safety and environmental standards while maintaining operational flexibility.

The initiative includes an associated voluntary certification scheme, enabling yacht owners to adopt best practices and demonstrate compliance with internationally recognised safety principles.

While adoption remains optional, the guidelines are expected to enhance safety awareness, support regulatory compliance in international waters, and reinforce the reliability of the Malta flag.

These guidelines came into effect on a voluntary basis on 1 June 2026.
